Misbehavior at school can be an opportunity for students to learn needed skills, including: self-regulation, responsible decision-making,  how to work with others, and how to be a part of a community.  Restorative Discipline Practices allow students the opportunity to process, reflect, and learn from  their misbehavior; these practices also shift away from a solely punitive approach to discipline.  Restorative Practices give students the opportunity to restore relationships with peers, adults, and the classroom community.  They also give both students and staff new tools when approaching discipline, and focus on long-term improvements in student behavior.

The following principles reflect the values and concepts for implementing restorative practices. These include:

1. Acknowledging that relationships are central to building community.

2. Building systems that address misbehavior/harm in a way that strengthens relationships.

3. Focusing on the harm done rather than only on rule-breaking.

4. Giving voice to the person harmed.

5. Engaging in collaborative problem solving.

6. Empowering change and growth.

7. Enhancing responsibility.

In Bellville ISD, our teams see the value in implementing Restorative Discipline Practices with students.  These include experiences such as, students understanding why their behavior is unacceptable and what the benefit of changing their behavior is. Other experiences include, students beginning to understand the answer to the question “How has my life changed by making a different choice?”  Through reflection, students are gaining ownership and accountability for their actions.

In Bellville ISD, we have high expectations for all students, and we Fill In the Gap With Trust. Restorative Practices are one approach to discipline that allow us to implement these values: Trust and High Expectations.
